Sistergirl: (or Sistagirl) A term used by some Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to mean ‘trans woman.’ Sistergirls were assigned male at birth yet often identify and live as women in their communities. This term is often used more broadly as a term of affection outside of the trans community.
Brotherboy: (or Brothaboy) A term used by some Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities that is broadly similar to ‘trans man.’ Brotherboys were assigned female at birth yet often identify and live as men in their communities.
Sex assigned at birth: When a doctor decides that a baby is either male, female or intersex when they are born. The sex assigned at birth does not always match up with someone’s gender identity.
Gender identity: The gender that you feel suits you best. Gender does not necessairly have anything to do with the body you were born in.
Cisgender: A term used to describe a person whose gender identity is the same as the sex assigned to them at birth. For example, a cisgender woman is someone who was assigned female at birth who identifies as a female.
Gender diverse: A broad term for those whose gender does not align with the sex they were assigned at birth.
Non-binary: A term used to describe people whose gender does not fit into ‘male’ or ‘female’ categories.
Intersex: Intersex people are born with sex characteristics that do not fit typical ideas of ‘male’ or ‘female’ bodies. Intersex is an umbrella term used to describe a wide range of natural bodily variations. Intersex is not about a person’s gender identity.
Trans or Transgender: A term referring to people whose gender identity and/or expression is different from cultural expectations based on the sex they were assigned at birth. A trans or transgender person may identify specifically as trans or transgender, or just male or female, or outside of these binary categories. Being transgender does not imply any specific sexual orientation. Transgender people may identify as heterosexual, gay, lesbian, bisexual, etc.
